“I really like the new addition to the school. But I do not think that the parking was thought thru enough. There are parents that do not read the signs and drive in the wrong way. They park wherever they want. It is hard for us parents that do things the right way. I really think that there should be someome out there to tell parents.”

“I am very concerned about how the administration determines their students are pushed through the school, from one grade to the next when they continually hold a 'D' or 'D & F' average. My son has been going to this school since the first grade and his grades have continually gotten worse. When he was failing the 5th grade, I asked that he be retained and they refused. Now this year his grades are not any better and I again requested he be retained and again they refused. Mr. Coria, the principle, said that even though my son does not show the maturity to pass into the 7th grade this year, his standards test show he has a passing knowledge of his grade so they are promoting him anyway.”

“the assistant principle ms. perhamus ,at the school really gets involved with her students. a couple of mine where having some problems at school and she took them under her wing .. and helped them out alot. they are doing much better.”

“I agree with other parental comments regarding Ms. Perhamus the Asst. Principal. She is not only involved with the students but parents as well. She goes above and beyond everyday and my appreciation and admiration for her are immeasurable. The upper grade Principal, Mr Coria, I have found to be fair, bright, and involved with parents. He has worked hard to bring the PTO back to Westwind, makes a point of knowing parent names and their children, and was a driving force in the success of the first Community Pride Day event at our school. Also, my children went to all day kindergarten last year. Ms. Vogt is an outstanding teacher and we had a presentation and barbeque for the end of year. I think a graduation ceremony in light of the outstanding academics that was presented to our children is a small disappointment to the adults but not the children. I agree that sod instead of seed for the playground may have been a better way to go, but as for a fundraiser, parental involvment falls on a hardy few and that would have been too much. There is often a larger turnout for PTO meetings, but not on the sub committees or when it comes time to do the work. There is also small participation from parents on curriculum night, etc. As for the new building, they will be moving children next year while remodeling the old building. I think it will be much less disruptive to the older students for their classroom to move once or twice during the school year than for the younger ones to begin the year in the new building. Overall, Westwind is a school with an administration that is trying hard to do the very best they can for the students while scratching and fighting for every bit of funding possible. If you have ever been in Ms. Perhamus' office, you know that any funding is going to the children and not to providing lush offices for the administration! And my closing point, if your children have special needs, Ms. Heslip, Ms. Duvall, and Ms. McCoy are a wealth of information and are always willing to help.”

“Westwind School has a new principal. He is not a very good principal. I find him to be unfair, unable to get to the root of the problem as he doesn't address it even when brought to his attention. He likes to 'quick fix' for now problems between children.”

“I am amazed at the involvement of parents at this school. PTO meetings are packed and awards ceremonies are as well. The class size of 20 reported here is lower than any class my children have been in over the past 4 years, with the exception of one year that my daughter was in a pilot program where class size could not exceed 19. It is more like 25-28. I have not cared for the huge size of this school and am glad they have built on, though I think the larger new school is intimidating to little ones and feel that school should be used by the older students. Lunches are too rushed and when I observed, there were huge lines and lots of yelling and whistling by teachers and lunchroom staff. School needs more support for working and single parents during intercessions and half days. There is a huge lack of affordable childcare options for those times and it is a huge burden to parents. Playground is a mess and the school should have done a fundraiser or something to put in sod rather than wasting almost 3 months of no recess to plant seed. It didn't work well in the end anyway. As far as staff goes, I believe it is above average and for the most part children get a good education. More Aides are Tutors are needed to tutor students who have difficulty in a subject. I am impressed with reading and writing at this school, but disappointed in math instruction.”
