At 1st it really use to bug me but then I realized that as a parent I need to help out too. My son needs me to be involved or else he will take over the school in hopes that I won't ever find out when he is up to no good. I agree with parents that feel the more involved you are in the child's education the more positive it all becomes. It's not going to happen overnight but it will happen. Just be patient and consistant with the open lines of communication. So we chose to buy a home in this area to send our child to PDR. That was 2 years ago. Now look at the ratings and reviews. We took our child off PDR and sent her to another school this year. Her teachers in the last two years (K and 1) were mediocre at best, unorganized and completely unable to get a grip on the class at worst. The principal refuses to see the reality and only maintains that everything is just 'great.' Bullying is a huge problem at the school that is not addressed at all. Academics are mediocre, my child was constantly underchallenged. And the numerous heavy-handed fundraising schemes drove me nuts. My two children have attended PDR and I have enrolled both of them in another school because I have not seen much on the positive other than what you can see on the surface. My now 7th graders AIMS (terra nova) scores have dropped from 'exceeding', prior testing int the over 90% to just 'meeting' grade level standards. This is unacceptable and very indiciative of the poor quality of education the children are recieving at PDR. My advice is run, don't walk from PDR. It is all about the appearance there and not the education. Unfortunately it is the few Bad Eggs that spoil the bunch. My daughter completed her education at PDR, and thank goodness. She is a bright, respectful student who was unfortunately provided teachers of little skill and level of maturity. The unprofessional behavior of some teachers out shadows any possible positive experience at this school. Numerous friends of my daughters have had assignments they have turned in marked missing and their grades were recorded innaccurately because of the inability of the teacher to do their job. Hopefully the district will look into what is going on at PDR and remove some of the bad eggs. It is one of the best elementary schools in Arizona. It deserves the A+ rating it recently received. The principal is involved with the success of the teachers and students. Anytime we had a problem the teachers were available to discuss and resolve the problem. I believe the negative reviews on here are the result of a few 'disgrunteled' parents. It is obvious that several of them were written by the same parent with the same grammatical errors. The key to success at this school and any other is the parental involvement. Many parents don't get involved and then stand back and complain and blame the teachers and principal. The problem with this school is the immaturity and lack of professionalism of the teachers. The lack of involvement the principal displays in anything negative. I truly believe the principal follows a 'if I don't know, then there's no problem' type of attitude. No foreign language at this school leaving the children at huge disadvantage. If you are prepared to have your child's desire to learn and their emotional well being jeopardized then you would be fine sending your child to school here. If you would like your child to have a positive learning experience and an increased desire to continue to learn then don't send your child to PDR. I like: - the Read-a-Thon which raised almost $8000 for the school! - the 1st Grade reading contest. It has really gotten my child excited about reading! - the Bake Sale to raise money for Heifer International, an organization that buys goats and other livestock for families in 3rd world countries so they can survive. - that the 6th graders hold a 'World's Fair' in the cafeteria/gym and all grades attend to learn about other countries. - that they do 'Fine Dining Day' twice a year, so kids know how to behave in a nice restaurant setting. - the variety of extracurricular activities offered at the school. The principal takes no responsibility for anything. In fact I am not very certain what the principals roll is in any situation. There is no follow through as far as the teachers are concerned, they supply you with a progress report on a sporatic basis and when they do it is not up to date or accurate. My son and several of his friends have been grounded by there parents because of 'missing' assignments recorded then to be told by the teacher the information sent home was not up to date. The teachers work with the parents and communicate very well with them. The prinipal knows most all of her students and is around doing her job whenever we have been there. Discipline could be better handled in the upper grades but for the most part the students respect the adults and vice versa. Tutoring is available from teachers and staff if parents are willing to seek it. It is up to parents to ask if needed. Teachers we have had make sure we know it is available to all students no matter what there needs are. Parents can't exect teachers and or the principal to do everything. The parents need to be a part of their childrens education and show up to meetings and conferences. I agree that the more involved I am, the better the teachers know me, I know them, and the better we communicate about my kids. I've helped with reading, Art Masterpiece, class parties and trips, and PTSO, plus I'm an employed mom. Making time for volunteering is possible! I've had one bullying problem, but we resolved it with the principal's and the teacher's intervention. And, I think the quality of the education they've received has been outstanding, including ALP and Band.
