Chicago Hamburger Company: sliders and more

Published: Jun 1, 2009

The Chicago White Sox sweep into town for spring training every year, but they're not the only memento of the Windy City in Phoenix. The Chicago Hamburger Company has been serving up authentic Windy City meals since 1981. And, unlike the Cactus League, the Chicago Hamburger Company calls Phoenix home year-round.

The restaurant's packed with nostalgia from Chicago's past; whether you're dining in or waiting for your take-out order; you'll enjoy the reminiscence of sports memorabilia and Chicago culture.

The menu lists a variety of hot dogs, sliders, burgers, sandwiches, milkshakes, sides, wings, salads and more.

What's a slider? A slider is a mini-hamburger and a staple food in Chicago and much of the Midwest. The Windy City sliders are served Chicago style with mustard, ketchup, pickles and onions. They're authentic enough to even satisfy the folks at Camelback Ranch — the spring rraining home of the White Sox.

You can get them with or without cheese and with double meat. Every day after 4 p.m., you get 10 sliders for $9 or 10 cheese sliders for $10.

It's no surprise that a place known as the Chicago Hamburger Company has a bountiful burger menu. Take your pick of chuck, cheddar, Western, veggie, turkey burger and an assortment of chicken burgers: broiled, cheddar, teriyaki, parmesan and barbecued. Prices range from $4 to $7.

Other sandwich options include hot and cold choices: the Italian beef and turkey, made with hot and sweet peppers; the Philly or turkey cheese steak, barbecued beef, turkey on whole wheat, Super Fish (fried fish sandwich), triple cheese sub, turkey provolone or beef and sausage combo ($4–$7).

Daily specials prove perfect for bargain-meal hunters: on Monday, the Vienna hot dog and choice of fries or coleslaw ($4); Tuesday, the one-third-pound cheese burger or turkey burger and fries ($6); Wednesday or Saturday, the grilled bratwurst and choice of fries and coleslaw ($5); Thursday, Vienna corned beef on rye with coleslaw ($6); and Friday, the Philly cheese steak sandwich ($6).

Buffalo wings are served by the dozen, and can be ordered in mild, medium, hot or nuclear. But be careful! These wings can be very hot! Wings can also be ordered with teriyaki or barbecue sauce ($7).

Cool things down with an old fashioned milkshake. These hand-made wonders come in a variety of flavors including vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, root beer, peanut butter and coffee. You can also add banana to any milkshake or make it a root beer float, too ($3-$5).

Other side options include onion rings, fried zucchini, chili, Frito pie, coleslaw and peppers ($1–$3). Of course, you can always get French fries; try them Chicago style with chili and cheese.

With such a small parking lot so you may need to seek a spot around the corner. There's curbside parking on 38 Street or on Amelia.
