Published: Mar 28, 2009
Feel like taking a trip down the Nile River but can’t afford Egypt? You’re in luck. At The Nile Café, you'll find authentic Mediterranean cuisine at affordable prices.
Start your lunch or dinner with one of their many appetizers. The falafel platter is a great choice: eight crispy ground fava bean patties with fresh herbs and spices and accompanied with Tahini sauce.
Or try the Babaganush — exquisitely seasoned charbroiled eggplant puree served with pita bread. Other options include the hummus platter, which includes a sampling of their five hummus flavors: regular, roasted bell pepper, cilantro-jalapeño, artichoke and sun-dried tomato. The restaurant even has Nile fries smothered in feta cheese, parsley and the house vinaigrette.
At lunch, specials include the chicken or kingdom shawarma sandwich. The shawarma is grilled chicken and/or beef with spices, lettuce, tomato, onion and tsatziki sauce, all wrapped in pita bread. The falafel and gyro sandwiches are served with the same fixings.
Vegetarians can opt for the Koshari — lentils, chili peppers, rice and macaroni in a tomato sauce — among the meatless menu items. The Nile Café also serves Greek salads, vegetable sandwiches and fatoush, a Middle Eastern salad made with several garden vegetables and fried pita pieces.
At dinner, The Nile’s menu includes shish kabob: vegetable, chicken, beef, lamb and kofta. Or try their lamb shank or couscous with beef or chicken. Among the sides on offer are black-eyed peas, spinach with rice, Nile rice and mixed vegetables.
The Nile Café serves three soups each day. The chicken lemon soup — chicken, rice, parsley, lemon and carrots — and the chicken curry and lentil soup are available daily, while the third offering varies. There are also options for kids: grilled cheese, chicken nuggets, and a chicken rice bowl.
Saving room for desert? The Nile serves baklava, rice pudding and kinafa, a seminola and cheesy concoction served with syrup.
