Paradise Hawaiian BBQ: authentic island flavors

Oct 16, 2009

Far from the tropical islands and without a luau in sight, Paradise Hawaiian BBQ offers authentic Hawaiian dishes with a Korean flair. Diana Kang and her family relocated to Tempe in 2008, from Waikiki in search of a climate change and lower living costs. When they arrived, they quickly realized that they had something special to share with their new home, a tradition of good food and superior hospitality.

This family owned and operated restaurant became an instant hit with the local crowd. Success due mostly to the cuisine, but the decor of Hawaiian scenery and Sun Devils memorabilia didn’t hurt either.

The menu dons traditional items including chicken katsu, shrimp tempura and bbq beef. Other items include meat jun—marinated beef or fish that has been egg battered. Also, spicy bbq chicken or pork and kalbi Korean-style ribs. All of the plate lunch options are served up in huge portions and come with your choice of four side dishes. Side dish options include steamed rice, macaroni salad, steamed vegetables, seaweed and bean sprouts ($7-$10).

In addition to the Hawaiian dishes, there are several hearty Korean soups to choose from. To wash all the yummy goodness down, try one of the fruity Hawaiian Sun canned drinks made from real cane sugar. There is also a selection of draft and bottled beer available.

So, the next time you find yourself on or near the ASU Tempe campus, be sure to stop by Paradise Hawaiian BBQ for a satisfying Hawaiian experience—good luck finishing all that food! No grass skirts or coconut bras needed.
