ASU Gammage schedules flights of fantasy

Published: Apr 30, 2009

It will be a summer of music, magic and flight at the ASU Gammage performing-arts center, where Chitty Chitty Bang Bang  will fly in June 16-21, followed by the broomstick-wielding Wicked July 1-26.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, a timeless musical based on the novel by Ian Fleming, is the story of a magical car that sails the seas and flies high in the sky into an action-packed adventure full of suspense, drama and humor.

The special engagement of Wicked will take you back to the magical land of Oz, long before Dorothy’s journey down the Yellow Brick Road. You will experience the story of two unlikely friends and how their circumstances, looks and personality differences ultimately influence their rivalry, as one becomes the Wicked Witch of the West and the other Glinda the Good Witch.

Wicked music and lyrics are provided by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman, based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire (which was, of course, inspired by The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum).

Ticket prices for for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang range from $23.25-$71.50. Wicked ticket prices range from $32-$138.50

Show times are at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday.  There is also a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday and Sunday.  There are no shows on Monday.

Tickets can be purchased at the ASU Gammage box office, Monday-Friday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.  Tickets are also sold online through Ticketmaster or by phone at 1-800-982-ARTS (2787).

Coming in September to the ASU Gammage stage is Legally Blonde.  Then, Little House on the Prairie in December,  followed by Mary Poppins in February 2010.  Visit the ASU Gammage website for more information and to keep up-to-date on events and future engagements.

ASU Gammage is a performing arts venue and architectural landmark at Arizona State University and is one of the largest university-based performing arts venues in the United States.

With a performance hall that seats 3,000, ASU Gammage is home to the M&I Bank Broadway Across America-Arizona series and presents a variety of Broadway productions each year, as well the grand opera, musicals, symphony concerts, lectures and  more.

This eight-story building opened  in 1964, with an original design  by Frank Lloyd Wright with two pedestrian bridges that give a  "welcoming arms" feel to the structure.  It is the only public building in Arizona designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and was commissioned 1957 by ASU President Grady Gammage.
