Camp Science: a smorgasbord of discovery
Published: Apr 27, 2009
Got a kid who’s a freak for test tubes and telescopes? Camp Science this summer might be the perfect place to explore the mad scientist within. Instead of spending the summer fighting off poison ivy and mosquitoes, campers can find a smorgasbord of scientific discovery.
Kids 6 to 11 can take part in one-week sessions running weekly from June 8-July 24. Two of the sessions will also be offered at Frost Elementary School in Chandler. Camps for teens 12 to 14 years will run July 20–24 and July 27–31.
The younger campers will start things off in the Chemistry Cabin, learning through hands-on test-tube experiments using various acids and bases. Then, on Day Two it’s all about the Biology Bunk: Campers will learn the fundamentals of DNA and its application in plants, animals and their own bodies.
By Day Three, campers will be ready to jump right into the Physics Field. Here they will apply Newton’s laws to teamwork and problem-solving activities.
But hold on tight, because the fun-filled week doesn’t stop there! On Day Four, the great outdoors reign. With Geology Back Packs, campers will explore what makes a volcano erupt and lightning strike Then, on the final day, they'll learn about the planets in our solar system and the myths, legends and stories behind them at the Planetarium Playground.
Teen campers will have an opportunity to learn about cancer research, watch doctors in action and see what it takes to pursue a career in the medical field at the Barrow Neurological Institute of St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center.
Each session costs $200 for Science Center members and $225 for non-members. All week-long sessions will run Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
For an extra $50 a week, you can sign up for early drop-off and late pick-up, which extends those hours to 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. This option is only for 6- to 11-year-old campers.
Be sure to pack a lunch and drinks, because they won't be provided. You can register your youngster by calling (602) 716-2028.
