Eye Lounge: a contemporary artspace, Oct-Nov featured artists

Sep 26, 2009

Eye Lounge is a collective, artist-run, contemporary art space committed to fostering emerging and established visual artists in downtown Phoenix since 2001. Along with other galleries, restaurants and retail businesses, Eye Lounge offers events throughout the month and three new exhibits by leading Arizona artists open every month.

Every Third Friday of the month, Eye Lounge, along with other Roosevelt Row galleries offers intimate receptions for the exhibiting artists. Enjoy a relaxed casual environment, light refreshments and conversations with artists and other friends.

During the months of October and November, Eye Lounge is hosting two featured exhibits:

First, Jason Koster presents "Portraits" in the West Gallery. Koster views his images as calming and he has created them to serve as a daily affirmation or visual mantra centered on the theme of self awareness. Each of his projects explores different facets, such as ego or judgment and addressing the ways that people lose sight of themselves and their surroundings.

Then, Lisa Marie Sipe presents "Polychromic Outthrusts" in the East Gallery and in the Project Room. Lisa Marie Sipe is a painter who uses acrylic and encaustic to interpret the beauty of nature in unexpected and provocative ways. She explores the fingerprint of nature, pushing the boundaries of her imagery while maintaining an organic feel.

Sipe is offering a special one day only encaustic painting workshop on Saturday, October 24 from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The cost of the workshop is $150 and all supplies are included. Advanced reservation is required. Anyone interested can send an email to chrisjagmin@gmail.com. In this course, students will learn the basics of working with encaustic in a hands-on exploration of this ancient wax art form. Encaustic is composed of beeswax, tree resin and pigment, applied hot and fused to produce works that are translucent, sculptural and rich.
