Big Surf: Ride the wild waves of summer

Published: May 12, 2009

Wet and wild thrills all summer long: That's what you can expect at Big Surf water park.

The summer season of fun kicks off Memorial Day weekend and continues through Labor Day. Hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m.daily  through Aug. 9, and then only on Saturday and Sunday until Aug. 30.

Big Surf calls itself America’s original wavepool and uses more than 2 million gallons of water.

As you enter Big Surf, you can’t miss Waikiki Beach. If you’re a daredevil looking for thrilling waterslides check out the Abyss, Hurricane Falls, Kilauea Cove, Tornado Twister and Avalanche. There are so many waterslides at Big Surf to choose from, it may be hard to pick a favorite.

For the younger thrill seekers, there are smaller waterslides like the Cyclone, Tsunami and Tahitian Twisters. Also, in Bora Bora Bay kiddos can climb, splash and slide around.

Captain Cooks’ Landing provides a place for toddlers and features playsets in the shape of  a giant frog, alligator, seal and turtle where your little ones can romp and climb.

if you work up an appetite with all that adventure, Subway Restaurant is on the scene to satisfy your meal and snacking needs.

Things can really heat up in Arizona, so if you’re hoping to cool down at Big Surf all summer then purchase a season pass for $79, includes admission to Big Surf’s sister park in Mesa, Sun Splash. Children under 2 are $20.

Once your in and ready for your fun filled day, be sure to rent a locker for your bags — $11 and a raft that you can use all day in the park — $5.

If you’re only looking for a one time visit, general admission $26 — over 48 inches tall and $19.50 –under 48 inches.  Children 2 and under are $3. Also, every Friday night from June 19 through July 31 you can visit Big Surf for Night Splash from 7-11 p.m. for $15.

You can buy tickets online to avoid lines when you get to Big Surf.

Big Surf also hosts summer birthday parties.  Packages include all-day admission, pizza, table settings and a free admission voucher for the birthday child. There's a 10 person minimum, and prices range from $26-$28 per guest.
