Hall of Flame Fire Museum: celebrating an honorable past

Feb 20, 2010

Established in 1961, the Hall of Flame Fire Museum features more than 90 fully restored pieces of fire history dating as far back as 1875. A very special exhibit at the Museum is the National Firefighting Hall of Heroes, honoring firefighters that have died in the line of duty and that have made other significant other acts of heroism. In the Hall of Heroes you can learn about the origins of the volunteer and career path of becoming a firefighter. Also, learn about the technology and how it has changed over time.

Other collections at the Museum include more than 130 wheeled pieces, 10,000 firefighter tools and clothing, 6,000 library holdings such as books, journals, magazines and manuals. The library also contains more than 50,000 photographs, paintings and other media items. Be sure to visit the arm patch, badges, ribbons, fire extinguishers, helmets and uniform exhibits as well.

The Museum offers a variety of educational programs for children ages 4-11. There is a junior firefighters workshop that includes a tour of the gallery, a fire safety presentation, interactive activities and a demonstration of water pumping on the museum’s 1969 Mack fire engine. There is also a fire safe kids class where volunteers travel to local schools to demonstrate fire safety practices to children.

The museum hosts several fundraising events each year that help to fund more collections and exhibits. This is a great place for the whole family to visit and learn about the honorable world of firefighting history.
