Arizona Doll & Toy Museum: one fun stop in Historic Heritage Square

Published: Oct 16, 2009

The Arizona Toy & Doll Museum is a fully restored 1900’s home, called the Steven's Bungalow and it provides a glimpse into the toys of the past. This red brick structure is located at the northwest corner of Washington and Seventh Streets. The Museum features an authentic replica of a 1912 school room and features antique dolls on display. Built in 1901, this Hands-On Heritage House offers free educational hands-on activities and exhibits for kids. The house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and then acquired by the City of Phoenix in 1974.

At the Museum, kids can play with many old-fashioned toys and explore what it would have been like to work in the kitchen or to wash clothes before the advent of modern conveniences. There is also a gift shop where visitors can take home a souvenir, toys, books and other items. The gift shop is a cash only store.

The Museum is located in the Historic Heritage Square in the heart of downtown Phoenix which consists of several historical buildings that includes the Hands-On Heritage House. The main attraction in Heritage Square is the Rosson House Museum. Which offers guided tours that allow patrons to view the remarkable architectural design elements of this mostly Italianate three-story home, including an octagonal tower, an expansive veranda and lathe-worked posts.

Heritage Square is also home to the Arizona Science Center, where visitors can explore advances in technology and media, experience how electricity works and see how magnetism and gravity play a role in everyday life. And, for a bite to eat while you're there be sure to visit City Bakery, a family-friendly place to enjoy lunch after a fun-filled morning of science exploration. It offers a variety of healthy lunch options, including soups, salads and hot and cold sandwiches, along with a variety of bakery treats to satisfy your sweet tooth.

There’s a lot great fun to be had in the Historic Heritage Square so pack up the family and made a day of it in downtown Phoenix.
