International Wildlife Museum: explore the world

Published: Oct 16, 2009

Founded in 1988, the International Wildlife Museum highlights over 400 species of insects, mammals and birds from around the globe. Many of the collections are over 100 years old. All the animals in the museum collection have been donated by various government agencies, wildlife rehabilitation centers, captive breeding programs, zoos and individuals.

With a mission and strong dedication to increasing the knowledge and appreciation of wildlife, the educational exhibits at the Museum are innovative and foster hands-on experiences. The wildlife is depicted in a natural setting and each exhibit features videos and interactive computer activities that offer historical information and promote conservation. This close up experience helps the visitor to gain a better understanding of the animal’s adaptive characteristics, habitats and conservation issues.

The featured exhibit is “Big Terror” a man-eating tiger from Northern India. Learn the story of this tiger’s life and the havoc he caused for many years in India. Some of the other exhibits you will find while exploring on a self-guided tour include “Stealing Wildlife”-this exhibit examines the different types of poaching, why hunting is NOT poaching and what you can do to help stop it. There is an exhibit on the Arizona Jaguars which are the largest cats in the western hemisphere and the third largest cat in the world after the tiger and lion. There are also many insect collections including a large collection of moths.

While visiting the museum, be sure to check out one or more of the wildlife theater presentations. These daily shows include Bats—explore the fascinating and misunderstood world of bats. Or, catch the Totally Tropical Rain Forest, Wildeast Australia and The Worlds Below—take a journey into the undersea worlds of California’s Monterey Bay.

Explore the International Wildlife Museum website for more information about rotating exhibits, educational programs, volunteering, theater show times and group visits.
