Mesa Arts Center fosters inspiration through many mediums

Published: Jun 8, 2009

Located in downtown Mesa, the Mesa Arts Center offers more than 200,000 square feet of performing arts, visual arts and arts education space.  The center opened its doors in 2005 and cost nearly $100 million to build.

With the mission of fostering inspiration through impact and engagement in the arts, the Mesa Arts Center is the largest and most comprehensive arts center in the state of Arizona. This architecturally pleasing center boasts four performance theaters, five contemporary arts galleries and two art studio buildings. The center encompasses a rich desert-meets-contemporary landscape that offers a serene oasis environment by day and a luminous beacon by night.

The Mesa Arts Center offers hundreds of performing arts events each year. For a list of upcoming events, visit the Mesa Arts Center website here.  Ticket prices vary depending on event and can be purchased on the site.

The art galleries host a variety of visual art shows that change several times a year. One currently popular feature is "Androgyny: new work by Sergei Isupov", and is on display until August 8.

Recognized as an accomplished technician and painter, Isupov uses complex surrealist figures and imagery throughout his display of twenty large-scale human heads and intricate drawings. Hidden within the vignettes that appear at the bottom of each piece is a visual narrative of each character.

Another featured exhibit is "Archaeologica: The Disposable Museum of Jessica Drenk", and is on display until August 2. Using disposable items like toilet paper, coffee filters, Q-tips and other common materials; Jessica Drenk recreated natural history specimens. Her work is truly distinct.

The art studios at Mesa include a variety of mediums: ceramics; paintings; jewelry; and sculpture are just a few.  The visual arts education program offers art experiences for all ages. Classes, lectures and a fun summer camp for kids are available.
